Buddleja Davidii (Buddleja Davidii) - beautiful deciduous shrubs with large, fragrant, colorful inflorescences that attract butterflies very much. Blooming buddley is very decorative, see the photo below and you will see for yourself. This is one of the reasons for the growing popularity of summer lilacs, as it is also called, in our gardens. In addition, the buddha of David is growing rapidly and requires little attention. The buddley family is diverse, with more than 100 varieties. The description of some suggests that they are small and large shrubs, tree creepers, even tall trees. Buddleya David grows in the tropics, subtropics of Asia, Africa, America. Some species are found in mountains, semi-deserts, even deserts.
Buddley David, photo and description
Different types of ornamental shrubs of David buddley grow and bloom in different ways. In some, flowers bloom on the shoots of the current year, in others - in the spring, before the leaves appear, only a few bloom from early spring to late autumn.
Small buddley flowers are collected in panicles or inflorescences similar to large spikelets. Depends on the variety, what color they will be - yellow, orange, purple, white or purple-red.
Buddleya David, flower photo:
All species of this beautifully flowering shrub are thermophilic plants. But only the buddha of David was able to acclimatize not only in the south, but also in our middle latitudes. This is a tall, up to 1.5-2 m, sprawling bush with oblong leaves. The top of the leaf is dark green, the bottom is light, pubescent. The stem is also pubescent.
Flower form brushes resemble blooming lilacs. But the size of inflorescences in the buddley of David is somewhat smaller. With abundant flowering, the bush looks very impressive. To achieve this, it must be correctly trimmed, otherwise rare inflorescences will flaunt at the ends of bare branches.
Insects pollinate buddley, mainly butterflies. That is why the name of the flower translates as “butterfly bush”.
It would seem that a flowering bush should attract bees, but a narrow tube of flower, accessible only to the thin, long proboscis of a butterfly, leads to nectar.
Buddley David, landing and care in the open ground
Buddley is recommended to be planted under the window or at the porch of the house. You will fully appreciate the aroma of flowers throughout the summer. He is pleasant, but not intrusive.
Buddley loves the sun, loose earth with the addition of lime and humus, rare but abundant watering. Feed the bush with ash, mineral fertilizers 3-4 times during the summer. Feeding before flowering (July-September) is especially useful.
From May-June, the shrub attracting butterflies begins to grow rapidly, by the end of summer it reaches a height of 30-50 cm. The bush blooms in the third, sometimes in the second year.
It should be remembered that David’s buddley does not tolerate wrapping with a film for the winter, because during thaws, condensation forms under the film, i.e. high humidity, which can destroy the plant.
Trimming David's buddley
In autumn, all branches are cut, leaving hemp 3-5 cm. In the south, you can not do autumn pruning, but for better flowering it is recommended in spring, before the buds open, cut the bush to 1/3 of its original height. The stems freeze in the winter, but grow back in the spring. Young plants must be covered with peat (15-20 cm) or spruce branches.
By the way, when pruning faded inflorescences, do not drop them near the bush. Under favorable conditions, for example, on moist soil or after rain, they can take root. However, you decide! After all, rooted cuttings can be presented to gardening friends!
Buddley david from seeds
For propagation by seeds of the "bush of butterflies" the best time is the last days of February - the beginning of March. Prepare a special light soil substrate, consisting of 1/3 of garden soil, 1/3 of sand and 1/3 of humus. The seeds of David buddley are sown on a moist soil surface, lightly sprinkled with earth and covered with a film. Seeds germinate after 3-4 weeks. After the threat of spring frost has passed, the seedlings are planted in open ground, at a distance of 50-70 cm from each other. Seedlings grown from seeds will bloom in the second year of life.
Buddleya David is especially good on the lawn when there are no other plants nearby.
Buddley David, reviews
I was very struck by the fact that from a seed planted in the spring, in the same year, by the fall, I had a gorgeous bush, about a meter high and well spreading.

Buddleya David has been growing for the fifth year. At first they covered, insulated, cried in the spring, thinking that she had died ... But ... For the fifth year now, we have been happy. One difficulty: every winter, all the upper shoots were frozen and the growth of new ones began from the base. It happens late. So in June - only a bare spot. I came up with and planted a lawn around the buddha. The green area on which branches first grow, which turn into a bush and bloom. I will not refuse Buddley. Elegant, thin, beautiful.

I drove these bushes around the site until I found a suitable place. This is the sunny side near the fence, blown and not shaded. Over the summer, the bush grows 1.5-2.0 m, thereby closing the view from the street. In spring I feed Kemer with fertilizer. But the main feeding is summer, as the bushes bloom all the same late. This infusion of mowed grass every two weeks. They probably like it, since they are so grateful. In the fall, I do not cut, but only pour 2 buckets of earth or rotted manure (that is) under the root. And in February-March I’m going to the cottage and cut to the snow level. It’s not convenient to climb in the snow, but experts recommend it and I adhere to their advice. Not let down yet. And it’s also very nice to put different colors in one landing pit.

I don’t remember when, maybe five years, maybe less, the first time I sowed seeds to Buddle. I really wanted beauty indescribable. All seeds came up, and there were 150 of them. Naturally, she drank about a dozen, the rest was scrapped, she had seeds like dust, she didn’t pour too much, and their germination was not known to me. In general, in the spring she planted. Towards autumn, bushes above me taller (170) have waved, and bloomed with white and blue inflorescences. Everyone in the butterfly district was attracted to themselves. Beauty! Before sowing, I already knew from the read sources that it freezes to the ground level, no matter how we shelter it. Therefore, in the fall, I cut it off, leaving small stumps. Sprinkled with peat and that's it! In the spring she wakes up very late. We must be patient. At me she began to drive shoots in early June. But growing very fast.

I once visited a school friend in the Krasnodar Territory. It was there that I saw the buddha of David for the first time. Of course, at first I thought that these were new varieties of lilacs, but my friend suggested that it was a buddha. Its drooping spike-shaped inflorescences with a honey aroma are simply incomparable. She also noticed that many beautiful butterflies constantly fluttered over the bushes. It turned out that the buddha was pollinated by them. Several varieties grew in the garden, there were white, lilac, pale and dark pink flowers. A friend suggested that I take a couple of young bushes, but I was afraid that they would freeze. It turns out in vain.
